Surrau Winery

Sardina

The winery is just a few kilometers from Porto Cervo along the Costa Smeralda (Emerald Coast), the Costa Smeralda is an International Jet Set destination for most of the year and you can see enormous yachts parked alongside trendy hotels most every day of the week. The entire northeast corner of Sardegna is known as Gallura, this rugged region that is 150 to 450 feet above sea level and where Vigne Surrau’s vineyards are in the center of Gallura and the soil is crushed granite. Very difficult soil to grow grapes in but once every other year they apply a layer of manure to add a bit of nutrient to the ground. The lack of fertile soil is a natural growth restrictor allowing the vines to produce fewer but more concentrated grapes naturally without having to do a severe green harvest. Their Cannonau Sincaru, Sincaru means sincere in Sardo, the Sardinian dialect and Cannonaou is actually the Grenache grape but called Cannonau in Sardinia. I was really taken with this wine’s purity richness and authentic character, the wine is fermented in stainless steel and then spends several months in cement tanks lined with epoxy. Cement tanks are the rage in winemaking now at one time they were replaced by the supposed ease of stainless steel but they seem to be more susceptible to electrostatic charge and vibration, needless to say Cement is back in vogue. The wine is really rich however has excellent balance and persistent freshness to go with the very complex aromatics and supple mouth feel.

2013 Vigne Surrau "Sciala" Vermentino di Gallura Superiore

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Spicy and super zesty in the mouth, the 2013 Vermentino di Gallura Superiore Sciala is redolent of white flower, peach jasmine and dried ginger. Vermentino sometimes has a sage-like edginess and this wine delivers that quality in spades. If you like crisp whites to pair with fried fish, this is a perfect choice. The wine rests on its lees for five months with battonage and this process helps to add dimension and thickness on the finish. (ML)
